I’m looking into buying a Wii, but I’m afraid that with some games I may not want to use the whole motion sensor thing. I realize that this is the whole big deal with the Wii, but in some previews / reviews that I’ve read, it sounds like so much work that it wouldn’t be any fun. Is there an option to turn this off and just play a standard video game, or buy a different controller?

There is a classic controller. Some games still require the nunchuck however.

For most of the new games you have to have a nunchuck, and for all of the new games you use the motion sensor remote. It's not very much work, mostly a flick of the wrist or aiming. Plus, since each hand has a separate part of the controller, you don't have to keep your hands and wrists together all the time. For shooters, the Wii motion sensor is the best and offers the most control. If moving more than your thumbs is too much, get a 360 and don't bother with a Wii. You will be missing out, Wii is the best.

There are some games where you'll have to use the nunchuck on. They don't have the option of "turning off." Example: Madden, no way can you turn something like that off. If you're into the old school games, i.e. Super Mario Bros., they only take the controller, no nunchuck allowed. You're just going to have to research the games you want to play and see what controller you would use. I'm on the same page with you, except I already own a Wii. Some games like Madden you just want to play with the controller.---but the nunchuck makes it more interactive. Research your games.
